8/24/06: Interview on the battles, conducted by AgentMGD.
Are you surprised that you won the DM Summer Battles again this year?
Yes, I actually was. I didn't think I would be able to stack up to a couple of the opponents that entered this year, but the tournament took a few unexpected turns early on and things worked out for me in the end.
How would you size up this year's contestants compared to last year's?
Well, like I said in the previous question, there were a couple of people who I was worried about from the get go, and then a couple more towards the end. I don't recall being worried about anyone in last year's tournament until the final round, so I'd say the competition went up a few notches this year definately, as I'm sure it will next year and the following years to come.
Which was your easiest and/or hardest battle and why?
I'd have to say my easiest battle was round one because my opponent no-showed, automatically progressing me to round two. As for my toughest battle, that would definately have to be the finals. Not only was it the determining round for if I would defend my title or not, but it was also a three way battle against 2 other very good emcees, making the stress level even greater.
In your opinion, how was winning this year's battle different compared to winning it last year?
It was harder actually. The prizes were two times better than what they had previously been, the competition was steeper, and I knew that since I had won last year, there would be higher expectations for me this time around. Not to mention that the competitors had their own agendas of making a name for themselves, winning the prizes, and stripping me of my title.
Are you planning to defend your title next year or are you going to retire?
I can't really give a definate answer right now, but with college starting up, I doubt I will be able to participate next year.
What's next for TLK?
Getting better as an overall emcee, branching out from battles, and getting more diverse with my music.
Any advice for those considering to challenge you next year for the title?
Punchlines, name flips, and personals. Those are the key elements you need to win a battle. Style of flow and beat choice come second, and if needed, skits come third. Go easy on the intros and outros as well, people don't enjoy hearing an emcee talk for long periods of time, and to be honest, it usually won't do anything for your overall track, except make you look like a novice who can't fabricate any decent lyrical content. Lastly, HAVE FUN!

to AgentMGD for conducting this interview, I really appreciate it!
